Nexus S - problems w/ bluetooth connectivity with A2DP headset

I have a Nexus S running Android 2.3.6. My carrier is Koodo.com.

I have a Nokia bluetooth A2DP stereo headset, model BH-503.

I am having consistent problems getting these devices to pair and connect.

Generally, it takes several attempts to pair and connect the headset with the phone. I can pair the devices, but once paired, they will NOT connect, no matter how many times I try.

Each time I want to use the headset with the phone, I have to

1. unpair the headset from the phone,
2. put the headset into discovery mode,
3. long press on the headset entry in the phone's bluetooth settings, and
4. select "Pair and connect"

This is the only method that works at all. Sometimes it works on the first try, but often it takes several attempts, pairing and unpairing until it catches.

Once paired and connected, everything works as expected, connectivity is solid and reliable until I disconnect.

This is a little tiresome, because each time I want to use the headset, I have to spend 2 or 3 minutes fiddling to get it going. My HP laptop, on the other hand, pairs and connects with the same headset, flawlessly and reliably, so I don't think the headset is defective.

My guess is there's nothing I can do about this, but who knows, I might get lucky. Any help would be welcome.
