Copy Paste from email?

Hope this isn't discussed elsewhere. I did a search and found mention in the "returned my Nexus" post, but didn't find anything else. I need to be able to copy and paste from received emails into other emails and google maps. In searching I've tried, it looks like you can do it with the droid's physical keyboard, but I can't find any way to do it on the nexus except in text fields. Is this possible!? Thanks for the help!

The more I search, the more I'm getting a queasy "must return phone" feeling... Looks like this has been an issue since 2008?!

Hi Suz,

I know what you mean with the queasy feeling, it seems with all these early issues though there's 'usually' a way around it, this following example lets you copy and paste your email from the native browser (e.g. www.gmail.com) or C&P anything from a browser, not from the native email app (I don't know how this can be done...yet).

Peculiarly the following menu options aren't available with the native email app.

It's no iPhone copy and paste but it is a workaround...

"Example of copy-paste is in the browser.

- Make sure you're zoomed in on what you want to copy.
- Press the Menu key.
- Press the More button.
- Press Select text."
- With your finger literally just highlight the text you want to copy, when you lift your finger it automatically copies it.

Thanks for the help! Yeah, I was able to figure out c/p with the browser no problem, but can't for the life of me figure out how to do it with email. Maybe someone knows of an ap out there that can do it?
I imagine they'll have to fix this as blackberries, iphones, and the palm have all been able to do this for years. I just wonder if they'll fix it soon, or if it'll be another couple handset cycles. It's been a problem since the G1!

If you just long press in the active text box of your email or your sms then you get a context menu for copy & paste - easy :-)

It's all in the Nexus One User Guide

@Tbird1 - have you actually tried to do this in an email that you've received, as it doesn't work for me?

I think T-Bird saying "ACTIVE TXT" means the actual BOX that you are typing the TXT into on an outgoing email, you cant copy and paste off of the previous e-mail that you are replying to ..

As stated in User Guide:

Editing text
To edit text
You can edit the text you enter in text fields and use menu commands to cut, copy, and paste text, within or across applications.

1 Touch the text field that contains the text to edit.
2 Use the Trackball to move the cursor to the location where you want to add or
delete text. The cursor is a vertical bar that indicates where text you type or paste will be inserted.
3 Type, cut, paste, or delete text.
4 Press the Back button when you’re finished typing, to close the keyboard.
You may also have a Next or Done button on the keyboard, depending on the application and text field you’re typing in.

To select text
You select text that you want to cut or copy. Selected text is highlighted in orange.
1 Touch the text field or other portion of the screen that contains the text to select. 2 Use the trackball to move the cursor to the beginning or end of the text to select. You can also touch in the text field to move the cursor in text.
3 Press & hold the trackball, or touch & hold the text field.A menu opens with options for cutting, copying, and performing other tasks with the text field.
4 Touch Select text. Or touch Select all to select all the text in the text field.
5 Roll the trackball to select the text you want. 6 Press & hold the trackball again (or touch & hold the text field) to open a menu
you can use to cut or copy your selection, select all the text, or stop selecting text.

To cut or copy text
1 Select the text to cut or copy.
2 Press & hold the Trackball, or touch & hold the selected text.
3 Touch Cut or Copy in the menu that opens.
If you touch Cut, the selected text is removed from the text field. In either case, the text is stored in a temporary area on the phone, so that you can paste it into another text field.

To paste text
1 Copy the text to paste.
2 Touch the text field where you want to paste the text.
You can paste text that you copied from one application into a text field in any application.
3 Use the trackball to move the cursor to the location where you want to paste the text.
4 Press & hold the Trackball, or touch & hold the text field.
5 Touch Paste in the menu that opens.
The text is inserted at the cursor. The text that you pasted also remains in a temporary area on the phone, so you can paste that same text in another location.

Yeah, you can (thank god) edit text when you're typing it in an active text field. Unfortunately, you cannot edit or access information people send you in an email. It seems there's some limited recognition of addresses, and phone numbers and properly formatted urls, but you don't get context menus, just a green rectangle that takes you to google maps in the instance of an address. I'm sure they'll fix this eventually, but since I can't evaluate how well it will be done, the phone's going back today.
