HOW TO convert any video to your Nexus One

You need to Rip the Dvd and get Rock Player from the Market. what you use to rip the dvd is on you.

The iPhone's screensize limitation is 720x480 (the specs from Apple specify 640x480, which is wrong). Using the same settings as you use for the Nexus, but with a screensize of that or less should play fine.

edit: 720x480 is the maximum resolution for video it will support, the device itself has 480x320. Unless you want them to play on the iPhone 4. The Nexus files should play on that without any problems

First load DVDFab Passkey 7, to unlock the DVD.
Second Load DVDSmith Movie Back-up to save the entire DVD to your computer.
Third use Handbrake to convert to play on the Nexus.

This works good for me. I alternate between DVDSmith and DVD Decryptor to save to computer.

There actually can be a quality improvement from upscaling in the encoder when the encoder uses a better upscaling algorithm (thanks to considerably more time and horsepower) than the mobile device (which has to upscale in real time with much more limited horsepower).

There can also be display improvement from reducing load on the mobile device -- it takes less horsepower to display at native resolution than to upscale.

The file size difference can be relatively small with a good encoder since the amount of real encoded information is similar.

For these reasons I usually upscale to native resolution when encoding for a mobile device.

Nero Recode (part of Nero Multimedia Suite, free trial available) is a great way to convert video for the Nexus One, easy to use, quite capable, and one of the best MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video encoders, producing excellent video and audio quality at relatively low bitrates. My recommended method for excellent quality:

At start-up, select Nero Digital as the target format.

After loading your video source, select:

1. Profile Category: Nero Digital
2. Profile: Nero Digital AVC
3. Encoding Method: High quality (2-pass)
4. Un-check Fit to target

Make sure your content is selected under Content.

The name can be changed by clicking on it.

Under Video Quality, use slider and/or click on bitrate number to change it to 900 Kbps.

Click Video tab:

Click Settings...

1. Click Resize tab
2. Select Custom Resize, and set width to 800
3. Click in height control to automatically set height
4. If height exceeds 480, then change it to 480
5. Check Square Pixels / Letterboxing
6. (Resizing method should be Lanczos)
7. Click OK

Click Encoder...

1. Select General settings
   Move Encoding precision slider all the way to the right (High quality)
2. Select Encoding tools
   Un-check all options under Main Profile and High Profile (per note below)
3. Click OK

Click Audio #1 tab, and in the Target section:

1. Codec should be AAC
2. Click Settings...
3. Under Audio Settings, select Custom
4. Set Channels to Stereo
5. Mode should be Low Complexity
6. Set Bitrate to 128 kbit/s
7. Click OK

Now back in the main window, click Next
Then in the Burn Settings window:

1. Set Destination to Hard Disk Folder
2. Set Target folder as desired
3. Click Burn to encode your video

Copy resulting video to your Nexus One.

Notes:

1. Resizing video to native Nexus One resolution is recommended for best quality and to reduce mobile device load during playback.
2. Setting Main or High profile AVC encoding options can result in jerky playback.
3. Video bitrate quality:
   1. 900 Kbps: excellent
   2. 600 Kbps: very good
   3. 450 Kbps: good
4. Audio bitrate quality:
   1. 128 Kbps: excellent
   2. 96 Kbps: very good
   3. 64 Kbps: good

I'm new to this mobile video encoding and had a bit of a rough time following the tutorial because version 0.9.5 of Handbrake seems quite different than the one used in the tutorial.

It would be really helpful is some generous soul who knows what they're doing could remake a tutorial with the latest Handbrake and perhaps with screenshots as well.

Hi guys, I've recently converted some videos to play on my phone using the tutorial found on this forum.

I had some problems with the conversion because of discrepancies between the current version of Handbrake and the one used by the tutorial writer.

Here's the problem: I start playing the video, sound and subtitles are good, but the video will randomly restart at the beginning. I then move the slider back to where I was and it continues playing but eventually it will restart again.

For one 25 minute video, it restarted maybe 5-6 times, for another it only restarted 2 or 3 times.

I've re-encoded the videos with slightly different settings (I changed only the video size) so I'll be trying that on my way home from work to see if it fixed the issue (I doubt it since I only changed the resolution to avoid stretching).

Any ideas what might be causing this? I'm using the built-in Gallery video player.

Have you tried a different video player like Rockplayer or Vplayer?

Not yet, there are so many available that I didn't just want to try one at random. I'll try the two you mentioned and report back.

I had a chance to try RockPlayer over the weekend and the experience was worse. Not only did the videos still restart by themselves, but the audio was out of sync with the video... problem which I did not have with the Gallery movie player. I haven't tried vPlayer yet but even if it isn't free I'll give it a try later on.
