The market kicked back into life for me at 5:30 this evening, still no gmail love though.

The word on the street is that China mobile CAN give you 3G, if your keen to change your phone number. I pay 50 kuai per month for 500 mb of edge goodness with China mobile.

Check out the Mainland China service availability dashboard:

Mainland China service availability

It says that Mobile services have been "Fully or mostly accessible (0-10%)"

Hmmm ... not for me!

I'm using StrongVPN for the stationary computer, paying something like $15 per month I think, and that works fine to reach facebook, youtube, blogger and all other blocked sites.

I remember they have an add-on service for extra $2/month if have a regular plan with them which supposedly should work to get access to everything via the phone. Have not yet tried it though but might have to look into that now if they are going to be blocking a bunch of services for my lovely n1!!

---

On a side note, about China Mobile.. they ARE using their own version of 3G which is much slower than the types used in the west. So even if have a 3G package with them it won't help if you have a n1 or iPhone from abroad or any other phone not bought directly from China Mobile.

China Unicom are using the European version of 3G provided by Ericsson, so that is much faster than China Mobile as I've heard.

I, however, still have a China Mobile account cause they are refusing to let me move my number over to China Unicom

Unfortunately! I did hard rest, soft rest, anything I can do you name it...trying to fix my gmail problem...then I saw this thread!

Now I can't sign in into my google account!

This is google problem! they should sort things out with china.

12VPN seems good! and they do support android.

Yea. I am on unicom for 98y per month for 300mb plus 0.3per MB after. Comes with lowered per minute calling and 240 minutes and free inbound. Don't know what else. Chinese isn't so good. The proprietary issue and the fact that I am north American, which uses its own retarded frequency is what helped me decide on the n1 in the first place.

On the topic, my calendar and gtalk officially down as of yesterday
