Ugh -- isn't it terrible? I also use WiTopia's personal VPN (the PPTP version) and it works fine to get around this issue.

Installing personalVPN-PPTP on Android Mobile Phone - Witopiawiki

I haven't used it in a while (I normally used it to download my Picasa web albums as well as upload my camera photos to Picasa), so I'll report back on how it's doing now.

Very annoying to have this issue ...

Nice tip! Thanks!

But when you follow this method, what is the username and password??

Update: Oh, duh... is this a paid service?

Ah - yes, it's a paid service! $39.99 per year. And as I'm testing my connection out, it's a bit slow ... but better than nothing I guess.

Does this issue maybe have something to do with Froyo? Are you guys all running Froyo?

It seems hard to imagine that China has blocked access to the entire Android market aswell as Gmail... What the hell is going on here???

No, I'm not running Froyo.

Current status: Gmail still blocked here in Beijing.

Yeah, I realized my calendar is fine too.

trn: If its affecting Google Mobile apps, it won't matter if you are wifi or not. The android gmail and andoid market are google mobile services.

Gregornz: I'm still on 2.1.

I'm gonna hold out a bit before considering setting up a VPN. See what happens. In the meantime I set up my gmail account through the N1 Email app.
Its not push, but it refreshes every 15min...

Still missing my Android market. I wonder if this will affect the Froyo OTA...

Hey, to those on China Mobile. The N1 works on the China Mobile 3G network? I thought they ran some proprietary Chinese 3G network.....How are the data plans?

I'm with China Mobile, and have installed Froyo 2.2, and the gmail app no longer works for me either as of this week, so I've had to move to the email app.

Interestingly though, I can still access the Android market and download (free) apps without a VPN.

I use 12vpn for both PC and my Nexus One for facebook/picasa, and it works pretty well.

park77 :- The Nexus One uses Edge on China Mobile, not 3G.
