Deleting data will remove you're gmail account from your phone. The emails are stored on the server, so they are safe. Next time you open gmail, it will ask for your user name and password, and will resync all your emails...

Give it a try!

I don't remember. Since then I rooted and installed latest gapps. You can try going to settimgs/apps/all and deleting data and cache then reboot.

Clarification

Push mail is a function of your telecom service provider...

They Push the mail to your phone

Your N1, checks for email periodically, when you have a data connection, and PULL's them> PULL Mail
