What is the best video converter?

I've had issues with Handbrake. It just didn't work for me. I've also tried PSPVC because of the customization options. No go.

I've made sure the file output is mpeg4 or h.264 mp4. I make sure audio is set for 160kbps or lower.

I need a good video converter for this device that works, AND that is customizable. Daniusoft converter will not allow me to do a custom resolution of 800x480. They are all presets. The most important features for me are customizing resolution for 800x480, sharpening, and something that actually works.

I use "Any Video Converter". I'm not sure what limitations it has for input and output types, but it does a great job on the VCD-compatible format I use for recording stuff off cable. It does allow you to custom-set the output parameters, so if it handles the inputs you have, it could be a good choice for you.
