'Reformatting' a phone thats acting up

I'm a complete noob when it comes to smart phones. I have a nexus one running gingerbread and cyanogen mod. Lately my phones been acting utterly stupid on a regular basis. Keyboard stops working, applications doing odd things, settings aren't being remembered. I could go on. If this was a PC I'd back up and reformat my OS partition. So how do I do the same with my phone? Is there a way to back up to my PC then reinstall gingerbread and cyangogen mod? I've heard I actually only need to replace the data.img file. Is this true? Thanks.

did you root it or buy from someone else

Also, if you are totally new, try this link to get some knowledge on all this and terminology. It took me weeks--well maybe months to get a grasp of it and still learning.

All forums like this and XDA have Wiki's with good tutorials.

We can help, but need a basic understanding of terms and your phone's features under Cyanogen.

What version Cyanogen/Recovery are you running?
