mobile gmail no longet semds email out

since my nexus one updated to 2.2.1 gmail has stopped sending messages typed on the phone. status changes to red sending heading and then can't reopen typed message to choppy to different email system. originally thought it was poor wifi/3g signal but happens at home with wifi.
I can't find any thing on settings that has changed. tried delegating stuff on phone in case it was a memory issue but not sure if this were the case if there is a threshold very annoying as was my main email outlet.

hoping its not the upgrade.

You can use the other mail app to easily setup your gmail.. try this

The fix (you'll lose the emails that are sending) is to go to the gmail app in Settings>>Applications and then stop it. Then clear the data from the app. After you are done, your gmail app will work again properly.

Nope, that fix doesn't work. I cleared both the cache and data for both gmail and stock email. I can't send out email with gmail. For that matter I can't even send email thru my comcast account.

Correction: woops> I forgot to Force Close the app before clearing data. It works now. Thank you Luq07 for the info.
