Clearing Dalvik Cache

Has anyone done this?

I was being bold last night cause I wasn't even sure what Dalvik Cache was but remember reading that ClockworkMod Recovery lets you do.

What exactly is it clearing?

And I have to say whatever it clears certainly seemed to hope the operation of my phone run a bit smoother.

Found this explaination on the Cyanogen forum.

"Dalvik-cache lives on the /data partition, and is the cache for the Dalvik virtual machine (it basically optimizes your programs to run on your phone, and stores the optimized versions.) Also, nothing bad will ever happen if you wipe your dalvik-cache. It WILL make your phone take longer to boot the first time after you clear it (since it has to re-build it), but it doesn't break anything. If you've uninstalled an app, and haven't wiped your dalvik-cache, that app's .dex file is still on your phone, slowing it down (probably imperceptibly, but still ;-) )"

I figured it did something like that. I kinda got a little froggy on the boot up cause like you mentioned it stayed on there a long time then boot up normally. But I can definitely tell a slight smother processing since I cleaned it. Not dramtically but noticably.

Its always good to wipe the Dalvik cache after flashing a theme. Or after flashing a new rom.

I'm pretty sure you must be rooted and have a custom recovery flashed to be able to do this.

Guess you'll just have to defect to the Dark Side!

LOL. My boss asked me how come I haven't rooted it yet. (I was telling him how fast my nephew's HTC Hero is now that he rooted his)...
So, maybe, one of these days I will root...maybe.

As stated in the first post Dalvik Cache is in data partition, if you wipe data you've wiped dalvik cache. Rooted or not. The choice, if rooted, allows you to wipe dalvik cache without wiping data. Which does have its advantages.
