Already got an unlocked bootloader, should I root?
Had to unlock my bootloader a while ago to get around Vodafone's tampering with froyo. I've been thinking about rooting, but I'm really comfortable with stock at the mo. I don't think I want to install any custom roms until after experiencing some gingerbread goodness.
My question is, would there be any advantage to rooting without flashing a custom rom? if i'm thinking right on this, it will give me superuser permission if i just use superboot - but what does that mean? what extra control will just having that give me? I know what you lot are going to say - why not try the custom roms anyway and flash back to stock when gingerbread is released? Let's just say I want to go slowly with the custom rom thingy, I know once i get into it i'll be a rom junkie soon enough! i just want to know if it is worth rooting without flashing custom roms at present. appreciate any advice on the matter

Not worth it. Why do you want to get your hand dirty later when you can do it now? You are half way already. Gingerbread is a different thing and of course will be much better but just like Froyo, stock Froyo give you only 50% of the fun. Rooted one with modded Froyo will give another 50% of satisfaction. Some may say that the stock Froyo is superb already. Try ask someone with CM6 RC3 or MCR or LeoFroyo.
IMHO, rooting now will help you learn all the necessary thing (since you will soon be a ROM junkie) required to flash ROMs, kernels, themes, radio etc. Next time you knew, by the time Gingerbread arrived, you are experienced. There are so many infos here in this forum to refer to. There are also some superb forummers who are willing to help anytime. You've got the bootloader unlocked already. I believe the rest is simple thing. Once rooted, you'll have not just extra but TOTAL control of the phone. Do whatever you want. Like I said before, you are already halfway, just another step. Custom ROMs are getting better every night!! We all know that Gingerbread is going to kick ass but the only thing that I want to know is how its going to look like when them modders get their hands on it. But that is my 2 cents. :cheer: Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk

Do it. If you think the Nexus One is customizable now? Wait until you flash ROMS/Themes.

Guys, thanks for your feedback - I must say you're persuading me.
If I did go the whole way and try some custom roms, do you have any suggestions on backup apps? I need to backup contact lists, purchased apps, internet bookmarks... ordoes a nandroid backup cover this? |

My friends, I've decided to root. Thanks again for the input, there IS a certain logic to rooting having already unlocked the bootloader anyway. Will let you know how my experience of the phone changes in the next day or so! |

Glad to hear it! Check out Rom Manager from the market once you have gained SuperUser Access. Its the Easiest way to flash a Recovery and Flash a Rom.
