The sync button means it is syncing with your Google services!

In Settings > Accounts and Sync

are the options of how often you want to sync them! It copies your Contacts, Calendar, and Gmail from the phone up to the servers, so if you ever lose or get a new Android phone, you can resync your stuff.

But does that mean that you're connected to the internet all the time? Or it just means that data will be pushed to your phone and will connect only during that time?

I have the sync set at every 30 minutes. I actually rarely see the sync icon...

I think the pushed data is separate than the sync. Like if you have a new mail, Gmail will forward it instantly with Push. But if you delete certain contracts/emails then they won't be updated on the servers until the sync happens.

It does affect battery (by holding the data link open) but as with other features of the phone it's up to you whether the functionality is worth it.

If you disable wifi the drain isn't particularly severe... The real killer is keeping that alive constantly.

I guess it would be better to switch the timing on it to, 30 mins to an hour instead of it trying to constantly sync.
