What is the purpose of the micro SD card?

I just got my phone last Thursday and so far I'm loving it. Now, understand I am not a technical person at all so I'm not sure why I had to have this phone but it has been working well for me so, so far I'm enjoying it. However, I have downloaded a couple of apps from the market and they are taking up quite a bit of my phone memory. I'm just wondering, what the heck does a person use the memory card for if you can only save apps to it if you have rooted your phone? I would like to have the extra memory but don't think I'm willing to risk the the problems involved with rooting if done incorrectly (like I said, I'm not a very technical person). Why is the SD card even there?

The purpose of the SDcard is to save everything else; i.e
Pictures, contacts, music, videos etc. and very few market apps

Well, that's what I figured.....

but I can't seem to save photo's or video to the card. I went into the menu looking for the option to do that. I guess I'll keep looking, trying to figure it out. Thanks.

Connect your phone to the pc, a notification will come, open the notification tab and select mount SDcard then your pc will see the Nexus as drive, then you can drag, drop, delete... etc.

Photos and videos automatically saved to sd card?

Am I correct in assuming that video and pictures are automatically saved to the sd card and this is why I cannot find an option in a menu to designate the card as the location to save to?

We travel alot so my Wife and I both have 32g cards.
Put a ton of recorded tv out of our dvr, and movies to watch on the plane.

I am sure as more upgrades come out from Goggle, apps will be able to be shifted to the card.

Yes, this is correct. I didn't do anything to the settings and pictures taken with my camera are automatically saved in the memory card. Also when I transfer music to the phone they are also saved in the memory card.
