To answer your question, there are a lot of really cool things you can take advantage of when gaining root access. Take a look at the kitchen and bake your own ROM. There are a ton of guides on this. Google is a great resource. I do suggest reading up on this before performing anything on YOUR device! I like how you can change the color of the notification light on the trackball.

No it does not matter if you purchased an unlocked one from the factory. To my knowledge you still do not have root access, until manually performing this action... which voids the warranty.
