Having service for calls/texts but no internet service

Okay so I'm what you would call a android virgin and i just popped my cherry last night i bought the nexus one, i don't have a data plan and i want to find a way to get around it basically what i need is to have service for texting and calling but nothing else its running 2.2 and i have all data disconnected but the problem is i can't get any service last night when i was using wifi and had everything disconnected and it was working internet with wifi, and the texting and calling then i left in the morning and when i looked at my phone i don't get any signal now.your help is greatly appreciated. thank you

Ok well the most logical explanation for no service would be that you have it in airplane mode or something but to disable the data you need to go to settings -> wireless and network -> mobile networks then uncheck data enabled.

Now for the rest of your problem I'm not sure I understand correctly if you could elaborate a little bit more I would appreciate it, thanks.

If you're using your old (pre-android) SIM card, you may need to get your carrier to update the connection data on their end, though they may want you to get a data plan...

If you know anyone with an android, try using their SIM in your phone, just to check...

Thanks for the help att just gave me the 200 MB plan as much I didn't want it ill just pay the extra 15, once again thanks for the help
