Angry Unlocking the root

Hey guys,
I'm such a newbie at all this hacking but I LOVE IT!!!!
I have an unlocked nexus on order.
Is there a difference between unlocked & rooted? My My Touch is rooted with tons of help from the awesome guys at the T Mobile forum. I thought unlocked meant I didn't need to root or is that just pertaining to my carrier?
I'm confused as usual
Do I need to root & if so will you guys give me a hand rooting my phone when it get's here????
If so, thank you so much!!!!!
Peace all!!!!
Love,
Gwen

Root means you got superuser access or something :P

You can even use this german tutorial and translate it to your language OR
use this and this

Google built a command to allow you to install alternative firmware into their retail bootloader? Wow. Much easier than it was with the G1 even.

So refreshing after dealing with apple..
