Everything you need to successfully root is in the first pages of this thread. NeonMonster outlined all the links to the places that have sites that helped a several of the one's that rooted on this thread.

I'm currently on Cyanogen 5.0.4.1 and it's been working nicely. If I want to switch to a different ROM, I need to wipe. Would I loose all the apps and settings?
