Question on wifi tethering !!

Guys I am new at this rooting stuff. just got my phone rooted y'day nite.
i was looking at couple of the forums, but still not clear..

let me ask you guys clearly..

when my phone (Nexus 1) wasnt rooted, and if i use wifi tethering my carrier can find it out and can chagrre me extra or block my web plan..is that correct ????
Now, since i have rooted my phone and now if i use wifi thetering then its safe ? means carrier wont know that i am using cell phones data plans to surfing ...is that correct ???

Which is the best wifi thetering apps ? paid and free.

Both WiFi and USB tethering are built in to the N1! Rooted or otherwise!

Settings>Wireless & Networks>Tethering and Portable Hotspot

But my question is...is it legal ? i have unlimited data plan , but i have heard that if your carrier finds it out that you are tethering then they put extra charge. is that right ?

That was the main reason to root the phone. somehwere i read that if you have rooted phone then if you use wifi tethering then carrier wont be able to catch..

what are your thoughts ????

Well, I'm on ATT, and I haven't had any issues with them trying to charge for tethering. Granted, I haven't used it much or often, but I have used it. I think your concern may be based on the volume of data used...i.e. if you use the Nexus exclusively for all your internet use, I'm sure it'd throw up a Red Flag to ANY carrier.

Likewise with Rogers in Canada. My home service was out one day (I telecommute) and I used tethering to connect my laptop to my office machine via VPN. It worked brilliantly and there were no extra charges.

It's built into the phone's capabilities without any modification. Unless the carriers force Google to change it there's nothing they can do.
