Yes.. there's an official client plus several others. OTOH you both have phones...

By all accounts the official client is pretty rubbish though.

Yes there is Skype light...I have not been able to make a VOIP call to cell phone or landlines. Sucks!

Get other apps like Fring or Meebo.

I have been using Nimbuz to chat with Skype people. Loved it on my NOkia devices and works well on the Nexus One as well. Wish Skype would come out with an official app but may have to wait a bit for that.

Imho the Skype application for the iPhone is crippled by the fact that Apple doesn't allow it to run in the background. What I would like is to have a client supporting Skype ALWAYS on, so that I can receive Skype calls on my mobile. Does anyone know if that is possible with the Nexus One?

The Skype Lite app uses standard telephone calls to access the Skype network. It does not use VOIP on your android phone, in contrast to the app that runs on the iPhone.

Skype doesn't seem to be in a big hurry to change this. There are other possible choices, such as Truphone. It may be that Google will get Gizmo5 running again.

yep, but the problem with the iPhone app is that you effectively cannot be called on it, as it cannot run in the background.

I know Skype Lite is crap as it is not using VOIP, but I am wondering if there is an Android alternative that
- does allow to make VOIP calls (like the iPhone app)
- can run in the background to receive VOIP calls

I see Fring, Meebo, Nimbuz, Truphone, Gizmo5 are mentioned, but does one of them have this features?
