Opening another app while on a call...

Hi guys, tried to google this, but to no avail.
On my Iphone it was easy to look up a contact while I had the other party on the line still talking to me. How do I switch from my call to another application without disconnecting, and of course, how do I switch back on my beloved Nexus?

there is probably a more elegant way of doing it - but I just hit the home button, then when I go back to phone it has the tabs at the top for contacts - again if you hit the home button you can go into any other app as far as I can tell

i just phoned answer phone and while listening i pressed home button and was able to listen and search contacts,lol same as above

To get back to your call, just pull down the notification bar and you'll see the call listed there ready for a quick tap back to the phone app.
