Gmail app has stopped syncing

Hey Guys

The Gmail App on my Nexus One (Gingerbread) has stopped automatically syncing. Last night it was fine but now it isn't. All the right boxes are still ticked in the app settings and sync is enabled in the phone settings.

It has happened once before and I got around it by clearing the the app data and then resyncing the app manually. I would prefer to not have to do this all the time though.

The app is on the phone memory rather than SD card and still downloads new emails when I press the refresh button when in the app.

Anyone know of what might be happening here? I just bought the phone a few weeks ago and didn't have anything like this issue with my Hero.

Appreciate your Help

Neil

Hi...I had a smiliar issue the other day wherein my emails wouldn't send, they would just hang there.

Try clearing the data for the app; worked for me.

I found this that I had saved from this forum last year:
well, mine has been working since the last time it happened. It got messed up when I added a new sync account, upto three now. Do the following and it worked for me:

1) menu -> settings -> accounts & sync

- click on a sync account and disable individual syncs: contacts, gmail, calendar
- repeat for all accounts

2) Same location as step 1
-disable auto-sync
- then disalbe background data.

3) menu -> settings -> applications
- click on gmail app
- clear cache
- clear data

4) same location as step 3
- click on gmail storage
- clear data

5) Restart phone

6) re-activate sync functions in backwards order of disabling them:
- enable background data.
- enable autosync
- enable individual sync items for each account

This fixed it for me and has stayed that way for some time now.

Give it a shot

I haven't had the need to use it yet, but it was something I saved just in case I ever had the problem.
I hope it works for you.

I fell victim to this issue a couple of days ago. Gave the suggestions a shot, but my issue is that I have no Gmail Storage application, as mentioned in step 4. The only Google related apps on my device are:

Gmail
Goggles
Google Backup Transport
Google Calendar Sync
Google Contacts Sync
Google One Time Init
Google Partner Setup
Google Search
Google Services Framework
Google Voice

I'll also note that my signal status is white, not green. Another thread mentioned how a white signal status indicates faulty communication between sync and Google services (someone with more knowledge can confirm/refute).

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Wiping data from the Gmail and Google Services Framework should be all you need to do. You should then reboot before trying to sign in again...

Thanks danger-rat. I'm embarrassed to say that the issue seems to hvae stemmed from being under 20MB of internal memory. All good now.

That's not cause for embarrassment. It's cause for a call to action!

All of us N1 users should all contact HTC and demand they upgrade our phones with 2GB of memory for applications! What idiot restricted our memory to 512MB?

Can you imagine what it's like for people with even more bloatware than us on the phone? eek!
