I am in SF and I got full 3g with at least 2 bars here except in my house 1 bar. Pretty speedy compare to my old phone Tilt2.

I read somewhere (maybe here) you can set your n1 to wcdma aka 3g only.
Go to the dial pad and enter *#*#4636#*#* (testing mode) you will the be able to go into phone information and select WCDMA ONLY. Hope this helps.
