Well unless I can get a data only plan it sadly looks as if I will not be putting a sim card into my phone. Pity

If AT&T doesn't offer data only plans, another carrier might, and with the two models of Nexus One available now, you could probably use any carrier in the US. Unless you're some kind of AT&T fanboy
 in which case you should gladly pay them for whatever they tell you to buy

well its about coverage in my area, I don't live in a big city and t-mobile has a really bad reputation around here :/
