Unlocked N1 on AT&T
I am planning to do the following when my existing AT&T 2 year voice-onlycontract with a subsidized SONY Ericsson phone expires:
1) purchase an unlocked Google N1; 2) since T-Mobile coverage is iffy at my home, purchase an unlimited data only plan from AT&T ($30/month), have AT&T transfer my existing phone # over to that unlimited data plan and use the phone in conjunction with my existing Google Voice account (which so far I've never used). That said, here is my questions: 1) Is it easier to use an application like SIPDroid with Google Voice rather than Google Voice alone? If so, why? 2) If I pursue this plan, will my use of the phone be dependent upon the existence of a wifi connection or will I be able to place VoIP calls over the AT&T 3G network independently of wifi? Thanks, |

Is SIPDroid the VOIP app?
Do you realize Google Voice is not a VOIP App?

Unlocked N1 on AT&T
My understanding is that Google Voice is a web application which can originate and receive voice calls over the web and also re-direct voice traffic to and from one's landline/mobile phone #'s.
Can you offer answers to my questions? |

It needs a phone number to direct calls to though. So as long as your VOIP system has an actual phone number associated with it I beleive your solution would work.

To qualify for the $30/mo data plan you need a voice plan.

Unlocked N1 on AT&T
At first one AT&T employee told me it was possible to get a $30 data only plan, but after reading post from dixy2k, went back to them and his boss confirmed, yes you need a voice plan.
So my question becomes, is there any way I can use an unlocked N1 for no more than $30 month total on amy carrier plan for unlimited data only? If so, exactly how would I do that? |

Hi,
I was using Samsung Eternity on ATT with voice and $15/month unlimited web plan. I purchased N1 unlocked and inserted the old sim card in N1. Everything worked fine, including the data (Not 3G), however, today the ATT system recognized that I am using N1 instead of Eternity and bumped me up to a $30/month smart phone plan. I am not sure if ATT can do this as they did not inform me about this and did not prevent me from buying any phone outside of ATT. Any thoughts, ideas?....I am thinking of fighting this battle. Read the fine print and you'll see they can do this without a warning.
You are using a smartphone, therefore you will pay for a smartphone plan. |
